Game Design Developers

There are a few different types of game developers. Game studios and indie (independent) developers. Game studios are funded by publishers, while indie developers are self-funded.

List of game studios:

• Electronic Arts (EA) – They’ve both developed and published a variety of games, such as: FIFA, Medal of Honor, Dragon Age and many others.
• 2K Games – Developers of many games, one of them being Borderlands.
• Bungie – Known for developing the Halo series.
• ArenaNet – Developers of Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.
• Riot Games is the company that created League of Legends.
• Blizzard Entertainment are the developers of many successful franchices: Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft. They also developed other games with World of Warcraft being one of them. Here’s a list of older games that were created by them in their Legacy Games page.
• Capcom has developed and published many games. They’re known mostly for their fighting games, most notably the Street Fighter series.
• Crytek has a legacy of creating games with top-notch graphics.
• Valve developed Steam, the Source Engine and very sucessful games. They developed Dota 2, Counter Strike series, Portal 1 and 2, Left 4 Dead and L4D2, Half Life series and the Team Fortress games.

List of indie game companies:

• 2D Boy are the creators of World of Goo.
• Artix Entertainment creates 2D RPG browser games.
• CCP Games is an Icelandic company that created EVE Online.
• The Behemoth – Developed Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. They’ve been developing XBox 360 games.
• Mojang – Creators of Minecraft.
• Wolfire Games is in the process of creating Overgrowth. You can see their team introductions here.
• Frictional Games is a company known for their horror games, they released the Penumbra series and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
• Jagex are the developers of one of the biggest MMO games, Runescape.
